TOP 14
TIPS to SAVE on GAS MILEAGE
1. Air the tires to the
recommended PSI level indicated on the sidewall (not the manufacturer’s
recommendation on the vehicle.)
2. Replace the air
filter.
3. Some vehicles alter air
box to add increased and easier flow of air to engine (see also #12)
4. Clean out trunk and
backseat – extra weight will hurt gas mileage.
5. Any added large bumpers
(front or back) or rear toolboxes should be removed to save weight. If not
possible to uninstall, remove unnecessary tools you don’t
need.
6. Use a good fuel
injector cleaner like BG’s 44K – that’s known to clean out
engine deposits.
7. If you are able change
spark plugs at 30,000 miles, do so. Don’t keep your spark plugs in
forever, you lose power and gas mileage with old, tired plugs.
8. Change to synthetic oil
if you can. It costs a bit more but the benefits are better gas mileage, longer
periods between oil changes and longer engine life.
9. Make sure your air
conditioner is off whenever possible. Compressors on the newer cars run about
80% of the time, not good for gas mileage. Roll the windows down and turn off
the air conditioning.
10. Don’t drive like
I do!! I am not a role model for “drive friendly” in Texas…I
draft whenever possible, not good for increased gas mileage.
11. Use a low resistance
air filter like K&N or Amsoil to help improve gas mileage.
12. Most GM truck air
boxes and/or an airflow meter can be used to increase gas mileage along with
box altering.
13. Check tire size
– the larger the footprint, the more gas required to move it and the
lower the gas mileage.
14. Professional help
can also lower gas mileage – consider bumping your timing up if an older
car or consider changing to synthetic oil.
