Drivers used to have no way to tell the difference between competent and incompetent automobile mechanics until the early 1970s. There was a huge need and, in response to the need, ASE, (National Institute for Automobile Service Mechanics), an independent and not for profit group was established.

What they wanted to accomplish was to improve vehicle repair service and quality by testing and certifying repair and service professionals.

Around 400,000 technicians hold current certifications at present. Here is how the ASE certification process works: Candidates register and take one or more of the 40-plus exams that ASE offers. After passing at least one exam and proving they have worked in the industry for 2 years, the test taker receives an ASE certification. This certification is not for life, though, those with ASE credentials must be retested every five years.

These exams are conducted twice a year around the country. The exams test knowledge of job-related skills and are not easy to pass; one out of three exams takers will fail the test.

You as a motorist benefit from ASE certification.; It is a valuable yardstick that measures the skills and knowledge of the technicians as well as the repair facility's commitment to quality of repair by employing ASE certified technicians.

Professionals with ASE certification usually wear blue and white ASE insignia and carry credentials listing their exact areas of expertise (engine performance, engine repair, brakes, etc) while their employers display these techs credentials in the customer waiting room.

All of our technicians are Master Technicians. This means he is certified in the 8 automotive testing areas: Engine Repair, Automotive Transmission/Transaxle, Manual Drive Train and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Heating and Air Conditioning, Electrical/Electrical Systems, and Engine Performance.

A Master Technician certification is very difficult to accomplish. Most auto repair shops do not even employ a Master Technician. We, at Cambridge, have 7 Master Techs, a fact that we are very proud of. That is why Cambridge equals automotive excellence!
